Kanter Confirmed as USDE Under SecJune 24, 2009
Dr. Martha Kanter was confirmed as the Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education by the U.S. Senate on Friday, June 19, 2009. Kanter will report to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and oversee policies, programs and activities related to post-secondary education, vocational and adult education, and federal student aid.
Dr. Kanter spearheaded the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources and the Community College Open Textbook Project. She has long been an advocate for making higher education more available and affordable for all. Currently, Kanter is the chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District.
She will give a talk on education issues Friday, June 26th at Hewlett Packard headquarters in Palo Alto. Kanter will be speaking about the state of education, particularly higher education, during a lunchtime event sponsored by the Silicon Valley Education Foundation. The event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday at HP headquarters, 3000 Hanover St.
