In its recent report “What Status for Open? An Examination of the Licensing Policies of Open Educational Organizations and Projects” to the Hewlett Foundation, ccLearn advocates use of CC licenses, especially the Attribution-only License (CC BY). The Attribution-only License permits anyone to adapt, combine, share, and republish open educational resources from multiple sources as long as the original author is given credit.

December 19, 2008New Open Textbooks for Math
December 12, 2008Connexions recently released three new open textbooks for mathematics instruction. The three open textbooks are Applied Finite Mathematics by Rupinder Sekhon, Elementary Algebra by Denny Burzynski and Wade Ellis, and Fundamentals of Mathematics by Burzynski and Ellis. These collections are a work in progress, and the content has not yet been marked up in CNXML. You can download file copies of individual chapters in from their respective modules. Faculty interested in reviewing or adopting any of these open textbooks are encouraged to contact Judy Baker (bakerjudy<AT>foothill.com).
“The Public Domain” Released
December 1, 2008Yale University Press combines a free download with the commercial sale of James Boyle’s new book, The Public Domain: Enclosing the Commons of the Mind under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike License. It can be downloaded free or read online. Lawrence Lessig, Jimmy Wales, and Yochai Benkler provide reviews.
