Designing for Open Pedagogy

Please join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) for a free and open webinar on Designing for Open Pedagogy.  Open Pedagogy was first introduced by Lumen Learning co-founder David Wiley, as a way to capture how the use of OER can change educational practices.  He relates that using OER in the same way as traditional textbooks is like driving an airplane down the road – it is missing out on what open can provide for student and teacher collaboration, engagement, and learning.

We will hear from two professors who have not only adopted OER but have redesigned their courses with the principles of open pedagogy.  Although reduced cost is what originally attracted them to using OER, involving their students in creating and evaluating OER course materials has significantly increased student engagement and critical thinking and their courses are continually being updated and improved as a result.

  • Suzanne Wakim, Biology Faculty Butte College, OER Coordinator

Will share her open course design strategy where students in subsequent semesters build on the work of those before them to create an open textbook and ancillary material. Students discuss and decide on how best to present material in the book, what applications are relevant for each topic, and what materials can help other students learn the course content.

  • Mike Elmore, Political Science Faculty, Tacoma Community College

Will share how he has engaged students in collaborative writing of an Introduction to Political Science open textbook.  His students report that writing assignments take on new meaning when they realize that other people are going to read their work.  Not just repeating what they have read or heard in class, they compare their understanding with their peers and collaborate to present their ideas in the best way possible.

Spring CCCOER Activities: Apr 27, May 11, May 18, and June 8

Please join us for our remaining Spring CCCOER online Activities, open and free to everyone in the open education community.  Our focus is on faculty OER adoption featuring both instructors who have successfully adopted/created OER, free platforms available for customization of OER, and how to design open courses that include students in analyzing and contributing to open educational resources.

  • CCCOER-Advisory meeting on Wed, April 27, 11:00 am PST/2:00 pm EST   In addition to our usual updates, please join us to hear from Peter Lindberg of the NOBA Psychology OER project and Adam Privitera, Psychology professor and department chair at Chemetka community college who has adopted NOBA OER in two of his psychology courses and has also contributed to the NOBA OER collection by authoring a learning module on Sensation and Perception. NOBA currently has over 92 modules that cover the scope and sequence for introductory psychology developed by experts in the field and free for you to re-use in our courses.  It also contains ancillaries for many modules including instructor guides, slides, test banks, etc.  You can use their textbooks as assembled or compile your own by mixing and matching modules through their authoring platform.
  • CCCOER webinar on May 11, 10:00 am PST/1:00 pm ES   The focus is Faculty Perspective on Adopting OER.  We will have 3 outstanding instructors presenting on proven practices for adopting OER in their courses and how they to work with other colleagues to expand use of OER to enhance teaching and learning.   Featured speakers will be instructors in Psychology, English, and Physical Geology who have successfully adopted OER in their courses.
  • CCCOER webinar on June 8, 10:00 am PST/2:00 pm EST   The focus is Designing for Open Pedagogy.  We will have several innovative instructors sharing how they have incorporated open pedagogical practices into their teaching since adopting OER.  Student are involved in analyzing and synthesizing open educational resources to enhance their learning and their work is built upon by subsequent semester students for continuously improving the learning resources for the course.

OEC Global 2015 Innovation and Entrepreneurship

I wanted to share some highlights from the amazing conference I was fortunate to attend in Banff, Aoec global 2015lberta last week. It was my fourth Open Education Global conference
(formerly known as OpenCourseware Global) and I can say that it just keeps getting bigger and better. More than 250 registrants from 37 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America helped us to understand the benefits and challenges of open education around the world. The commonality of our educational concerns regardless of which continent we live on always surprises me.

The conference started off Wednesday with a warm welcome from Athabasca, our hosting unAU1iversity, who gave us an overview of the growing open education movement in Canada.   An international panel in the afternoon lead by outgoing president Larry Cooperman of UCI featured open education projects from the Commonwealth of Learning, International Organization of Francophonia, UNESCO, and the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE). In the evening, James Glapa-Grossklag, CCCOER president and Dean at College of the Canyons was elected to be the Open Education Consortium board president for 2015.

Thursday mornings keynote featuring Dirk Van Damme from the Organization from Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) shared a vision for how OER can support innovation in teaching and policy to improve skill development and change the division of labor to be more equitable worldwide.

We enjoyed many great presentations from around the world on Wed, Thurs, and Friday but in particular I wanted to highlight presentations from and about community colleges.

On Thursday afternoon, we held the CCCOER panel on Promoting Student Success through Open Education featuring Phillip Davis, Delmar College; James Glapa-Grossklag, College of tcccoer panelistshe Canyons, Barbara Illowsky, De Anza College; Richard Sebastian, Virginia Community College System, and Quill West, Pierce Community College who shared their OER projects and answered questions from the very engaged audience.

Phillip Davis, Delmar College, also presented Educating the Masses through MOOCs on Tuesday afternoon, sharing the Geographical Information Systems MOOC based on the TAACCCT grant that he developed and ran on the Canvas network.

Kim Lynch and Greg Rathert from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities shared their exciting OER programs to engage faculty in OER adoption in Textbooks Can be Affordable?? Getting Faculty in the Game

I presented Faculty Motivation and Reflection on Open Textbook Adoptions featuring interviews with 13 community college faculty from the California Open Online Library (COOL4Ed) faculty showcases.   In fact, two of the interviewed faculty attended the session.

Barbara Illowksy, De Anza College, presented with Mark Santee, WebAssign, Inc on the The maturing OER ecosystem: partners, expansion, and critical questions highlight collaboration between OER producers and business partners.

Thursday night was awards night and in addition to being inspired by the virtuouso violinist and speaker Kai Kight, many community college educators were honored for their contributions to open education excellence. Individual awards featured the following CCCOER members:

  • Quill West, Librarian and OER Proje17225862446_ff56826969_mct Manager at Pierce Community College received the 2015 Open Education Excellence in Leadership award for her many OER projects in Washington State.
  • Anne Marenco, PhD Sociology Faculty and co-author of several open 17250085302_3c36df84c7_mtextbooks, received the 2015 Open Education Excellence in Teaching award for her work at College of the Canyons in California.


Winners of Sites, Courses, and Research included the following CCCOER members:

  • The Houston Community College Library lead by Angela Secrest, Library Director and longtime vice-president of CCCOER received an Open Education Excellence Site award.
  • Boyoung Chae, PhD, and Mark Jenkins, PhD from Washington State Bo17250167212_f2c476ab4b_mard of Community and Technical Colleges received a an Open Education Research Excellence award for their Qualitative Investigation of Faculty OER usage.

The Open Education Global 2015 conference ended Friday with a keynote from Mark Surman, executive director of the Mozilla Foundation, who offered: “the future is here, it is just not evenly distributed”, quoting futurist writer William Gibson. Various action labs allowed small interest groups to interact around special open education topics including Entrepreneurial Open Education, Open MOOC Development, Open Business Models, the Open Education Information Center, Open Education as an Inclusive Social Innovation, and more.

Although the conference was full of thought provoking presentations and panels, I believe the most compelling aspect may have been the hallway, mealtime, and evening conversations where likeminded folks gathered to have fun, share hard problems, and plan future projects with their open education colleagues.

Nov 12 webinar: Opening Up Pedagogy in Communications and History Class

Please join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) for a free, open webinar on how the use of OER can support more open pedagogical models. As faculty develop open educational resources (OER), a variety of challenges emerge, including identifying useful content, aligning it with course objectives, and measuring outcomes but opportunities for improvements in student autonomy and success are also possible.  Speakers will include college instructors and students sharing how the use of OER can enhance teaching practice and increase student success.

Christie Fierro, Communications Instructor, Tacoma Community College will share how she involves students in selecting and creating supplementary open content and in creating meaningful assessments of their learning.

James Glapa-Grossklag, Dean of Educational Technology, Learning Resources and Distance Learning, College of the Canyons and CCCOER Advisory President will facilitate the discussion.
